Arrange to take a farm tour at Gourmet Farms to see how vegetables and coffee beans are grown and harvested. Founded as a coffee trading company in 1978, today Gourmet Farms is a sprawling 12-hectare estate where visitors can follow the journey of coffee beans from germination to brewing, while also learning about growing vegetables. Please note that tours need to be booked ideally 7 days in advance.
Gourmet Farms president and founder, Ernest de Leon Escaler, introduced organic farming to the Philippines. Immensely enriched by his travels, Mr Escaler was inspired by some organic farms that he saw while on America’s West Coast. He wanted Philippine coffee beans to be regarded as one of the best in the world, and he also wished for his fellow Filipinos to enjoy wonderful coffee. He achieved both of these goals.
Initially, he roasted coffee in small batches until he bought the Probat roaster – the German-made Rolls Royce of coffee roasters! The Gourmet Farms facility produces its own gourmet blends, speciality coffee for retail in the Philippines, single-origin arabicas and custom blends for clients.
During the Gourmet Farm journey, Mr Escaler decided to build the Café to help educate visitors about organic farming. A natural cook himself, he took his love of Mediterranean food back to his homeland. Pizza is made on a wood-burning brick oven that was brought from Italy and his homemade salad dressings have been a roaring success. People have queued overnight to go to the café!
